Many people do this. Make sure that you tell your bank that the ATM card will be being used in the Philippines, or they might block it. Send it using a delivery confirmation method. Don't send the PIN along with the ATM card. Instead give the person you are sending it to the PIN either via a phone call to that person or some other method where you know you are talking to the person and only the person and the PIN is not likely to be intercepted. Make sure you can monitor activity on the account.

Medical Exams – A caller explained that the civil surgeon who completed the medical exam used the wrong form and then wanted to charge an indigent refugee to reprocess the paperwork on the correct form. What recourse does an applicant have if this occurs?

USCIS Response: Customers should notify the Director of their local office when they have a complaint about a civil surgeon.

I did the same thing years ago and had NO problems. Some suggestions to help:

Do NOT send the PIN with the card. Give it to them over the phone, or through txt or email.

Check with your bank to find out the rules about transferring money through the ATM card and what the person with the ATM card can see (which accounts). If the card is "linked" to the other account, you might be enabling them (or anyone who posseses the card) to SEE both accounts and TRANSFER funds by themselves. It might be worth making sure the accounts are NOT LINKED.

Watch out for the fees you encounter on withdrawals. Give them some common sense guidance about one versus many withdrawals (possibly more fees with many). Factor in the fees so that when you plan to give them $x, they get y php and not the amount reduced by the fees.

YES it is possible to send ATM to your family in PI.. Before I came to US my husband sent me an ATM card so he don't need to send it by WU. Charges are cheaper to and it was very convenient to him because he will just transfer money anytime.

Late last year, the ATM i left to my sis expired so I sent another ATM card to my family in Pagadian and 1 for the church in Bohol that we are supporting every month. They got it safe. I used EXPRESS MAIL every time i send ATM card. Just don't include a note with the PIN # for safety reason. It took only 7 working days to deliver the mail.

Sending your ATM card inside a Valentine's card will not be safe. Most Greeting Cards coming from abroad (USA,Canada) have been stolen or sometimes already ripped because scammers thought that there were money inside. I have sent two ATM cards to my parents and inserted them to the package I sent using flat rate box from US Postal Service. Everytime I send them packages this is what I use and even inserted small amount of money. So far, they all arrive safely to my parents in Davao. I'm not sure if this works safely in your parents place.

Agree with laradee,

50%+ of all greeting card type of mail sent by basic mail will never arrive.

Use a more secure method.

I sent my wife two credit cards by Fedex. Even so I was a little paranoid. I got a piece of thick cardboard and cut rectangles the same size as the cards and taped the cards in these holes. Then I got heavy duty aluminum foil and put one sheet on each side. Then covered with another piece of cardboard on each side taping the whole thing together. When put inside the Fedex cardboard envelope it was impossible to tell what was in it. My hope was even xrays wouldn't reveal the cards. The credit cards required activation which I didn't do until my wife told me the cards had arrived.

I gave my wife a atm card from our credit union fees are low .75 when she used the BPI ATM you use at most banks in the Philippines. Bank of America is the worse they charge $6.00 per transaction. I would say as a rule if you can have a credit union Visa Atm card account they are good with keeping the fees down. My wife did have on one occasion the atm did not dispense the funds the Philippine banks are very slow to investigate it is best to file for a dispute atm transaction at your bank right away as well as the Philippine bank.

sorry to be off-topic but this caught my interest. how much did u pay for a flat rate box sent to the Philippines? and how long did it take before your family received the package? Did they have to pay any fee? Because my husband always sent me packages when I was still in PI and everytime I claimed a package at a Philippines post office, I had to pay 300 pesos.
The whole part of being civilized is being able to control one's emotions when someone says something that they dont like.

side thought.. you might wish to have the "visa" portion of your debt card disabled by the bank. Most ATM Debit cards are now "visa enabled". This limits the places it can be used, but will also insure it can only be used with the PIN for CASH.

FEXED it.. add some other items to make it worth the rate. NEVER use regular mail.. for anything.. heh.

my 2cents.

oohhh im sorry to answer that question.. hehehehe i just realize that you are from USA.. and my husband is from Europe.. so there's difference in it... im sorry again...

no problem wink.gif I usually paid 35 pesos for the small packages and 300 for the big ones. When I send a package to my family, I use balikbayan box but it takes almost 2 months before it gets there so I'm now starting to think about switching to USPS flat rate box.

side thought.. you might wish to have the "visa" portion of your debt card disabled by the bank. Most ATM Debit cards are now "visa enabled". This limits the places it can be used, but will also insure it can only be used with the PIN for CASH.

FEXED it.. add some other items to make it worth the rate. NEVER use regular mail.. for anything.. heh.

hmmmm?im confused i thought the "visa" is automatically enabled or do i have to call the bank about it?coz you know most of the cards that has visa in it can be used for international transactions isnt it?pls clarify me im new to this...

I sent my sister an LBC ATM card through MoneyGram. To my surprise, it actually worked. she got the ATM card in just 2 days after I sent money at a MoneyGram agent.

The ATM card works on any ATM teller in Philippines. It has no transaction fee and/or maintaining fee. No ids required and you can send an ATM card per receiver. So I sent a card to my father and one for my sister.

The fee per money sent is 9.99. Your receiver won't get charge for anything else.
