Wondering,if there's a metal detector,what about a WATER DETECTOR??? 
I am looking for a device to detect the water flow underground from a broken pipe. Where to buy online?

Farm Show Magazine has a simple listening device you can put together quickly
A 4 to 5 foot length of PVC pipe, a styrofoam cup and a stethoscope.
Tape the cup upside down top of the cup against the end of the pipe upside down.
Attach the sound pickup of the stethoscope to the bottom of the cup.
Walk around the area where the pipe is buried listening for the water flowing through the break

Commercially produced listening devices are sold for this purpose also. Here is an explanation of how to use the leak detector from SubSurface Leak Detection, Inc. which is one of the manufacturers of acoustic leak detectors.
A similar problem is discussed in this forum thread (solved). They recommend an auto mechanic's stethoscope, which has a metal probe as the sound pickup, to listen for vibrations in machinery. You can either use the mechanic's stethoscope by itself sticking the probe in the ground to check for leak noise or fasten it the the styrofoam cup used in the FarmShow article.
If you want to buy a commercial leak finder, search for "Acoustic Underground Leak Detector". There are many variations on this theme from many different companies.
