GSM is what is used in the Philippines as well as many other places in the world. There is a lot that comes into play nowadays when we talk about frequencies, if all you need is phone calls then a phone that has 900 and 1800 mhz works in the Philippines but not in the US. You can look at THIS GSM chart to see what frequencies are used in different countries that you might be visiting and then decide if you will be using the phone for internet as well and if so then I would recommend an LTE capable phone if the area you will be in will have LTE available.

SMART LTE Frequencies

Philippines 900 1800     3G 2100 Digitel; 3G 2100 Globe; 3G 850/2100 Smart; 4G LTE Globe 1800Mhz; 4G LTE Smart 850/1800/2100Mhz; 4G LTE PLDT;

CDMA is extremely limited in Philippines. Unless someone can confirm it locally for where you would use it, forget this techmology.

GSM is found throughout the Philippines. At minimum use a phone that supports both 900 & 1800.

All data technologies are supported. 2G is almost everywhere. 3G is common. LTE is supported in only a few areas.

The following is information currently offered by AT&T for travellers to PI

Digitel Mobile/Sun Cellular

UMTS/3G Coverage Map
GSM/GPRS Coverage Map

Voice, Data, EDGE, 2-way text messaging
Technology & Frequency
UMTS 2100; GSM/GPRS 1800

UMTS service is available, but may be limited to major population areas.
GSM/GPRS coverage on major islands and in cities.

SMART

UMTS coverage may be limited to major population areas.

GSM/GPRS 900 Mhz coverage is available on major islands and in cities 1800 MHz coverage is limited.

According to Wikipedia
Globe will have LTE on 2500 & 2600 (in a news report Globe is planning to migrate WiMax service to LTE)
PLDT (Parent to Smart) is on 3500
Smart is on 850, 1800 & 2100

Sun Cellular LTE FAQ
Sun Cellular Mobile Internet FAQ

Pinoy Tech Blog has some basic information on LTE in PI in general with a particular focus on Smart.

For now, assume EDGE is available everywhere and 3G in most areas. LTE is still experimental.

All three offer some form of automatic setup of your phone for use with their data network via SMS. Wireless internet using EDGE and 3G have been available for many years on all 3 networks and an ordinary phone SIM will access the internet when used in a GSM device designed to access the internet such as a cellular modem or smartphone.

The adventures continue
