I hope I am posting this in the right place and someone can help me.

My wife and I are going to the Philippines in August....it will be my first trip there. I am trying to learn a little bit of Tagalog so I can communicate just a bit. Esmin is from Capas, Tarlac and she and her family speak Capampangan with each other. She told me, jokingly I hope, that she doesn't want me to learn her dialect so she can talk about me with her family and I won't know what she is saying. Just from listening to her phone conversations I have picked up little things like wa, ali, and sigi na. (I doubt I spelled them right)

What I would like help with is a nice phrase I can tell her in Capampangan. Something sweet. But, at the same time, something to let her know that maybe she can't get away with her little plan.

Not that I will understand anything she'll say in either Tagalog or Capampangan.

Thanks for any help.

Hi... I guess your wife was just kidding about you learning her dialect so you won't understand what she's saying smile.gif . My husband knows nothing about Capampangan aside from the word "Murit" (means "Crazy") biggrin.gif . That's nice that you have atleast picked up words like wa (yes), ali (no) and sigi na (please).

I don't know if these will help you but here are some of the capampangan phrases:
  • Ka-lu-gu-ran da-ka. (I love you)
  • Miss da-ka. ( I miss you )
  • Ayn-tin-dyan [ayn-tin-jan] ku ing sasab-yan mu. (I understand what you're saying)
  • Excited na-kung a-ki-la-la deng pa-mil-ya mu. (I'm excited to meet your family)
  • I-ka [e-ka] ing ka-kung bie [bi-ye]. (You are my life)
I hope I wrote them correctly. biggrin.gif
Goodluck...

Hi okdavid!

Hi peeps!!!OMG, it's been a long time since I visited WOF!!!Been so busy lately...

I appreciate you for your eagerness to learn our dialect!Welcome to our section and you are in the right place..;-)

BTW, I am from Capas Tarlac, where exactly in Capas is your wife from? I am from Sto. Rosario,I was looking at her picture and she looks familiar to me...learning kapampangan is so easy, I am sure your wife was just joking when she said that she doesn't want you to learn our dialect so they can talk about you..hahah..coz that was I usually say to my husband too when we want to tease him ..hahah...

Aloha's suggestions are good. You can use it to "deceive" them if they want to tease you..hahah..

Anyway here are some of my suggestions too...

Ika ing kakung yatu ( you are my world)

Kaluguran dakang mayap ( i love you so much)

oh malagu kung asawa! ( oh, my lovely wife!)

keng kakung pekakalugurang asawa ( to my ever dearest wife)

uman mu ku ( kiss me)

mayap a abak po ( good morning ) NOTE: use PO at the end of the sentence only if you are talking to a person older than you. It's a sign of respect especially when talking to your wife's parents.

mayap a ugtu po ( good afternoon)

mayap a bengi po ( good evening)

salamat ( thank you)

dakal a salamat ( thank you very much )

Hope these will help you ,and if you want us to translate some sentences that you want to learn don't hesitate to ask us.:-)

Thanks for the phrases aloha and bardge. They are greatly appreciated. Sorry I haven't been here lately to thank you.

Bardge, Esmin is from Cub-cub. Also, she went to the Dominican College of Tarlac. Maiden name is Sembrano. It would be pretty cool if you actually know her. smile.gif

Yo James! When I first started dating a pinay I learned a decent amount of
Tagalog. Turns out I ended up getting in trouble as people fired back in Tagalog thinking I spoke it fluently. My advice is to stick with English unless you learn a language fluently.
